Day Off!

After my extravagant New Year’s trip and taking a trip to Bosnia I finally had a day off! So what did I do? MORE TRAVEL, of course! Lauren and I have been itching to get out of Bar and do something since we got back from Bosnia, but the weather has been less than amazing so we’ve been “relaxing” lately (which means waking up around noon and not doing much else until practice). But finally the weather was nice, and the little girls from our club were going to Podgorica for a tournament, so Luka asked if we wanted to join them and see the city. We agreed and were excited by the fact that we didn’t have to deal with the trains. I was excited to finally have someone to travel with... and to go to Podgorica for other reasons than for doctor’s visits and ankle injections!! 

Mirko (our personal chauffeur) dropped us off at the first thing we wanted to see called the Hram Hristovog vaskrsenja (Orthodox church of Christ’s Resurrection). It was nice, but was still under construction so we just took a quick peek before moving on to something else. 

We thoroughly researched on the internet before going, but didn’t find much in the way of tourist attractions. One thing we DID find was a place called Skaline, which translates to “the stairs”. We thought it could be interesting, and it was on our list of things to see, but we stumbled upon it once we were roaming around the city. It was where two rivers met and it had the potential to be amazing, but check out all of those ummmm.....”flowers” along the way! Aren’t they gorgeous? We tried to ignore the wide assortment of unfortunate decorations and looked at how great it COULD be when it was green. There was a bridge that was the main focus, and i would love to show you a picture or two but for some reason Blogger can't find my pictures right now. Maybe when it's up and running again I can update with some pictures, but I'm sure you've seen them on facebook. 

Then we wandered some more and found the American Embassy (which will be helpful if we apply for visas for end-of-the-year traveling), King Nikola’s summer house, Milinijum Bridge and a tribute to a random Elvis-ish idol that was from Russia who according to Bojana only had one hit (if that’s all it takes to become a statue in Montenegro, maybe I should start warming up my vocal chords!!) 

Next we crossed the bridge -- after taking some pretty crafty self-timed pictures -- and headed into the town center. It was a nice pedestrian street with little boutiques and cafes, but many shops were closed because it was a Sunday. In the meantime, we called a teammate who we knew was in town and asked if she wanted to grab some lunch. She took us to a cafe with a pretty extensive menu, but we all ended up getting pizza. Then we met back up with the bus and headed back home. All in all, it was so nice to get out of Bar for the day and do what little sightseeing there was. In the future there will be MANY more little day trips like this now that I have someone to accompany me! 

Again, sorry about the lack of pictures. Not sure what's happening but hopefully it wont be an issue for the next post, which is when Lauren and I ventured up to Stari Bar!
